If the asphalt roof on your home is not looking good this can take away from the aesthetics of your home. To take care of this problem you should clean your roof before you have a new roof installed. Unless your roof is very old, cleaning it can get it looking new again. Below is some information about cleaning algae and mold on a roof.
Clean Algae
If you see light-colored streaks on your roof this is likely due to algae. The type of algae that gets on roofs is Gloeocapsa magma. Your roof is very susceptible to algae if you live in a climate that has warm and humid summers.
This type of algae will not hurt your roof but it makes it look very bad. Over time, the algae will spread over your roof and will eventually cover much of it.
There are products on the market that will remove the algae but you can also do it on your own at home using water and bleach. Fill a bucket with half water and half bleach and stir. Pour the solution into a sprayer, such as a sprayer that you use to apply weed killer. There are also backpack sprayers you can purchase at a home improvement store.
Fill the sprayer up with the bleach and water solution. Climb up on the roof and remove as much algae as you can with your hand. When finished, spray the bleach and water over the moss area and let it sit for about 30 minutes. This will give the bleach time to kill the algae spores. After this time, spray the roof with clear water to remove the bleach.
Clean Mold
If you see black colored streaks on your roof then there is mold on it. You can remove the mold in the same way that you removed the algae with the bleach and water solution. You do need to use a soft bristled brush to remove the mold first, however. The bleach will kill all the mold spores so the mold does not immediately come back. Make sure you wear gloves when doing this. You do not want to get mold on your skin.
There is a spray that you can purchase to spray on your roof that will protect your roof from mold. Make sure you apply it on a sunny day as it needs at least 24 hours to completely dry. The product that you purchase will have complete instructions on how to use it.
If you do not feel comfortable cleaning your roof, hire a roofing contractor to clean it for you. They can do a much better job at getting rid of algae and mold with the equipment they use.
